Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator is a type of crystal oscillator that connects a varactor diode in series with the crystal resonator. The capacitance of the diode changes based on an externally applied voltage, allowing the output frequency to vary with changes in the load capacitance characteristics of the crystal resonator. Its output frequency can be controlled by the input voltage, typically with a control range of ±50 to ±200ppm.
Working Principle
By changing the applied adjustment voltage, the value of the capacitive load CL can be altered, thereby adjusting the frequency. Due to the adjustable oscillation frequency characteristic of VCXO oscillator, frequency-temperature stability is used to define the impact of ambient temperature changes on frequency deviation. Since VCXO oscillators lack temperature compensation capabilities, they should be placed away from heat sources when laying out PCBs.
